Ofsted acknowledge that they are directing more and more questions to the website and recommend we use the website to gather information - https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/ofsted.
They also advise that we can now report changes and make notifications using the online EY3 form –
We can also email Ofsted if we want to ensure something is in writing – firstname.lastname@example.org.
Note – if you are notifying Ofsted about a change or incident they want to know –
- What has happened
- What have you done as a result?
We should note that the times when we need to notify Ofsted are detailed in the ‘Early Years Compliance handbook’ (dated March 2017) - page 15 onwards - https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/596057/Early_years_compliance_handbook.pdf.
If we ask questions about variations or similar they will direct us to the statutory requirements.

Childcare Register 2016 (in the Early Years and Childcare Registration handbook) –
However, Ofsted recognise that some childminders prefer to speak to them or are unable to access online systems during the working day. Ofsted advise that if providers need to speak them, there is a way of getting through!
Ofsted state: childminders should ring us on 0300 123 1231. They will then be presented with 5 options:
Press 1 if you are a child and want to tell us something
Press 2 if you wish to make a payment
Press 3 if you are a provider
Press 4 if you are an applicant
Press 5 if you are a member of the public
The childminder should press 3 and they will be presented with another 5 options:
Press 1 if your reference number starts with EY
Press 2 if you are a social care provider
Press 3 if you are calling from a school
Press 4 if you are part of a childminder agency
Press 5 if your reference number starts with anything else
The childminder should press 1 (EY) or press 5 (no letters before URN or ‘VC’) and they will be asked to select from 3 further options:
Press 1 if you wish to report an incident or discuss a waiver
Press 2 if you want to update your registration
Press 3 if you want to make a notification
After this selection the childminder will be asked to enter the digits from their Unique Reference Number and complete DPA before being transferred to an advisor.
So the simple route through the phone system is:
Phone: 0300 123 1231 > Press 3 (Provider) > Press 1 (EY) or 5 (no letters before URN or ‘VC’) > Select nature of enquiry > transferred to an adviser.
Nice and easy then! Please let me know if it works.
All the best for now, Sarah x
